The 7th China Wetlands Remote Sensing Conference and the
2025 Annual Academic Meeting of the Digital Wetlands Professional Committee
Background and Significance
Wetlands, often referred to as the "kidneys of the Earth," play an irreplaceable role in maintaining biodiversity, regulating climate, sequestering and storing carbon, conserving water resources, and providing various ecological services. They are a crucial cornerstone for the construction of ecological civilization and sustainable development. With the rapid advancement of remote sensing technology, the capabilities for dynamic monitoring and scientific management of wetland resources have been significantly enhanced, thereby strengthening wetland protection and restoration. In the face of the increasing threats posed by climate change, the functions and vulnerabilities of wetlands become particularly important, as changes in wetlands directly affect the stability of the climate system. The United Nations' Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and the international community have consistently emphasized the critical role of wetlands in mitigating climate change, especially their carbon sequestration capacity and ability to alleviate extreme climate events. However, the issues of wetland degradation and loss are worsening, necessitating the urgent use of remote sensing technology for global-scale dynamic monitoring of wetlands and assessing their impact on the climate.
Since the first China Wetlands Remote Sensing Conference was held in Changchun in 2019, the conference has become an internationally influential academic event in the fields of wetland science and remote sensing. It has promoted the practice of wetland monitoring, protection, and management, and provided intellectual support for wetland restoration and climate adaptation management in China. In 2024, the establishment of the Digital Wetlands Professional Committee of the International Society for Digital Earth China National Committee marked a new phase in China's wetland remote sensing research. To further deepen academic cooperation and technological innovation in the field of wetland remote sensing and climate change, the 7th National Wetlands Remote Sensing Conference will be held at the University of Hong Kong from November 28 to December 1, 2025. The conference, themed "Wetland Remote Sensing and Climate Change," will be jointly hosted by the University of Hong Kong and Guangzhou University. It aims to explore the dynamic response mechanisms of wetland ecosystems to climate change and their scientific management strategies, contributing wisdom and strength to wetland protection and sustainable development.

Site 1: Hong Kong Wetland Park

Located in Tin Shui Wai, New Territories, the Hong Kong Wetland Park is a 61-hectare Ramsar Wetland site renowned for its integration of conservation, education, and recreation. This world-class facility features diverse habitats, including freshwater marshes, reedbeds, mangrove forests, and mudflats, supporting over 250 bird species, 50 dragonfly species, and rare flora and fauna. Its visitor center offers interactive exhibitions on wetland ecology and global conservation, while outdoor facilities such as bird hides and floating boardwalks enable close observation of nature. As a key conference site, the park exemplifies urban wetland management, biodiversity monitoring, and the application of remote sensing technologies, highlighting the balance between human activity and ecological preservation.
Site 2: Nansha Wetland Park (Guangzhou)

Situated at the western Pearl River Estuary in southern Guangzhou, the Nansha Wetland Park spans 6,670 hectares (10,000 mu) and represents one of the Pearl River Delta’s most ecologically significant coastal wetlands. Once tidal flats, the area has been transformed through ecological restoration into a mosaic of mangrove forests, reed marshes, and lotus ponds, earning it the titles “Guangzhou’s Kidney” and “Migratory Bird Paradise.” Hosting 185 bird species annually, including endangered black-faced spoonbills, the park combines conservation with cultural-tourism through activities like mangrove boat tours and birdwatching along meandering boardwalks. A National AAAA-level Tourist Attraction, it serves as a model for ecological rehabilitation and sustainable tourism in delta regions.
Site 3: Futian Mangrove Nature Reserve (Shenzhen Bay)

The Futian Mangrove Nature Reserve, spanning 367.64 hectares along a 9 km coastline in northeastern Shenzhen Bay, is China’s only national nature reserve embedded within a megacity. Dubbed a “green gem” bordering Shenzhen Bay, this critical habitat supports migratory birds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. The reserve demonstrates how rapid urbanization and wetland conservation can coexist, offering insights into coastal ecosystem resilience and anthropogenic impacts. Its proximity to Shenzhen’s urban core makes it a living laboratory for studying adaptive management strategies in high-density city environments, aligning with the conference’s focus on balancing development with ecological preservation.
